Ending a Culture of Impunity: The Role of Media in Shaping Public Perception

Violence against the vulnerable is not an anomaly – be it rape or bonded labour. There are countless examples of inflictions of criminal injury against the poor and the marginalised. Yet, not all of it go down in the records as violation of human rights. The role of media has time and again, come into discussions. To engage with such questions and more, a panel discussion on ‘Ending a Culture of Impunity: The Role of Media in Shaping Public Perception’ was organised. The discussion was preceded by three short documentaries/films illustrating a few forms of violence inflicted upon the vulnerable, and their plea for justice.

 

The overall objective of the panel discussion was to support building consensus among budding leaders of change and other interested individuals and groups towards empowering media as an institution of accountability, shaping public perception and stimulating action.

 

The discussion saw eminent panellists such as Mr. Prasanth Nair, Senior IAS & Filmmaker, Mr. Vishal Arora, Independent Journalist, Video Storyteller & Mobile Journalism Trainer, Ms. Anu George Canjanathoppil, Director, International Justice Mission Delhi and Mr. Satyendra Ranjan, Senior Journalist, and moderated by Ms. Asmita Nandy, Journalist – Quint.
